Since 2010, Matthew House Ottawa has welcomed and supported hundreds of refugee claimants, and provided quality used furniture to 7000 families in need.

Position Overview  

We are seeking a skilled and certified General Maintenance Handyman to join our team. This full-time role involves performing a variety of basic repair, maintenance, and general upkeep tasks for our facilities. As a key member of our team, you will ensure that our properties remain safe, functional, and well-maintained. Tools and transportation will be provided.

This role is ideal for an experienced handyperson with a commitment to high-quality work and a proactive attitude.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Maintenance and Repairs

  • Perform routine inspections of facilities to identify and address maintenance needs.

  • Complete basic repairs, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting tasks.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve general building issues efficiently.

  • Maintain heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems as needed.

Upkeep and Improvements

  • Assemble and install furniture or equipment.

  • Perform preventative maintenance to extend the life of building systems and equipment.

  • Assist in improving spaces by installing fixtures or making aesthetic upgrades.

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure that all work complies with safety regulations and building codes.

  • Address safety hazards promptly to maintain a secure environment.

  • Report any major maintenance needs or potential hazards to Manager.

Other Duties

  • Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.

  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests or emergencies as needed.

  • Assist in coordinating with third-party contractors for specialized repairs.

Essential requirements 

Certification: Possess valid certification in one or more relevant trades (e.g., electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc.).

Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in general maintenance or related fields.

Skills: Proficiency in basic tools and repair techniques across multiple trades.

Physical Fitness: Ability to lift, move, and handle heavy objects as required by the role.

Communication: Strong verbal communication skills to interact effectively with team members and stakeholders.

Problem Solving: Ability to troubleshoot and address issues promptly and independently.

Driver’s Licence: Full G driver’s licence

 

Working Conditions

Tools Provided: All necessary tools and equipment are supplied by the employer.

Schedule: Monday to Friday, with occasional on-call duties for emergencies.

Work Environment: Indoor and outdoor work in various weather conditions.
