Since 2010, Matthew House Ottawa has welcomed and supported hundreds of refugee claimants, and provided quality used furniture to 7000 families in need.
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled and certified General Maintenance Handyman to join our team. This full-time role involves performing a variety of basic repair, maintenance, and general upkeep tasks for our facilities. As a key member of our team, you will ensure that our properties remain safe, functional, and well-maintained. Tools and transportation will be provided.
This role is ideal for an experienced handyperson with a commitment to high-quality work and a proactive attitude.
Duties & Responsibilities:
Maintenance and Repairs
Perform routine inspections of facilities to identify and address maintenance needs.
Complete basic repairs, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting tasks.
Troubleshoot and resolve general building issues efficiently.
Maintain heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems as needed.
Upkeep and Improvements
Assemble and install furniture or equipment.
Perform preventative maintenance to extend the life of building systems and equipment.
Assist in improving spaces by installing fixtures or making aesthetic upgrades.
Safety and Compliance
Ensure that all work complies with safety regulations and building codes.
Address safety hazards promptly to maintain a secure environment.
Report any major maintenance needs or potential hazards to Manager.
Other Duties
Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.
Respond promptly to maintenance requests or emergencies as needed.
Assist in coordinating with third-party contractors for specialized repairs.
Essential requirements
Certification: Possess valid certification in one or more relevant trades (e.g., electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc.).
Experience: Minimum of 2 years of experience in general maintenance or related fields.
Skills: Proficiency in basic tools and repair techniques across multiple trades.
Physical Fitness: Ability to lift, move, and handle heavy objects as required by the role.
Communication: Strong verbal communication skills to interact effectively with team members and stakeholders.
Problem Solving: Ability to troubleshoot and address issues promptly and independently.
Driver’s Licence: Full G driver’s licence
Working Conditions
Tools Provided: All necessary tools and equipment are supplied by the employer.
Schedule: Monday to Friday, with occasional on-call duties for emergencies.
Work Environment: Indoor and outdoor work in various weather conditions.
