About Matthew House Ottawa and Your Role

Matthew House Ottawa operates with a dedicated team of over 40 staff and 75 volunteers, and an approximate annual budget of $4 million. The Executive Director (ED) oversees 6 direct reports and is responsible for the overall strategic, operational, and financial management of the organization. The ED collaborates closely with the Board of Directors and senior staff to ensure the organization achieves its mission and objectives.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Strategy

●      Provide visionary and strategic leadership that motivates internal and external stakeholders toward common goals.

●      Foster a collaborative, consensus-building, and partnership-oriented environment.

●      Demonstrate strategic thinking, vision, wisdom, and judgement (knowing when to say yes and when to say no).

●      Develop, implement, and monitor strategic plans to achieve the mission and goals of the organization.

●      Foster a positive, collaborative, and inclusive organizational culture.

●      Monitor and respond to systemic trends and emerging needs, collaborating with the board and senior staff as necessary.


Board Relations

●      Serve as the primary liaison between the Board of Directors and staff/volunteers.

●      Collaborate with the Board to develop policies, set priorities, and ensure effective governance.

●      Prepare and present regular reports on the organization’s progress and challenges.


Fundraising and Development

●      Lead the organization’s fundraising efforts, including grant writing, donor cultivation, and major gift solicitation.

●      Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy to secure necessary financial support.

●      Maintain strong relationships with existing donors, grantors, and government funders, and identify new funding opportunities.


Financial Management

●      Oversee the financial health of the organization, including budgeting, cash flow, forecasting, and financial reporting.

●      Ensure proper financial controls and compliance with all relevant regulations.

●      Manage the organization’s resources effectively and responsibly.


Program Management

●      Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services.

●      Ensure programs align with the organization’s mission and strategic goals.

●      Foster innovation and continuous improvement in program delivery.


Community Engagement and Advocacy

●      Serve as the primary spokesperson for the organization.

●      Build and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, partners, media, and other stakeholders.

●      Advocate for the organization’s mission and causes at municipal, provincial, and federal levels.


Human Resources:

●      Oversee the recruitment, development, and retention of high-performing staff.

●      Foster a healthy and positive work environment that values diversity, respect, and cooperation.

●      Ensure compliance with all employment laws and organizational policies.


Operations and Administration:

●      Oversee and ensure the delivery of high-quality programs that align with MHO's vision, mission, and values.

●      Ensure efficient and effective administrative systems and processes.

●      Manage organizational risks and ensure a safe and healthy workplace.

●      Understand the legal framework for nonprofits and ensure compliance with all laws and regulations.

Qualifications

●      Minimum of 5 years of senior management experience, preferably in the nonprofit sector.

●      Proven track record of successful fundraising and resource development.

●      Strong financial acumen and experience with financial management.

●      Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.

●      Demonstrated ability to think strategically and drive organizational growth.

●      Bilingual in French and English preferred.

●      Passion for the vision, mission, and values of Matthew House Ottawa.

Compensation

Matthew House Ottawa offers a competitive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience and qualifications. Salary: $105,000 - $125,000 based on experience.
